Research Team 

Mitchell Friedlaender, MD

Mitchell Friedlaender, M.D., is Head of the Division of Ophthalmology and Director of the Laser Vision Center at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California. He is also Adjunct Professor at The Scripps Research Institute. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, and received his ophthalmology training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, and the University of California San Francisco. He was a full time faculty member at the University of California San Francisco before moving to Southern California in 1986. He has 25 years of clinical research experience in allergy, dry eye, infection and inflammation.  He has been a frequent lecturer and consultant in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Dr. Friedlaender is the author of 6 books and over 250 scientific articles. He is a recipient of the Senior Honor Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and is a member of the American Ophthalmological Society. He has been listed in "The Best Doctors in America" each year since 1994.

Martin Friedlander, MD, PhD

Dr. Friedlander received his undergraduate education at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine where he graduated with Highest Honors in Biology. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in the Committee on Developmental Biology and his M.D. at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. He journeyed to the west coast for his clinical training in ophthalmology, completing a residency and retina fellowship at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been on the faculties of the Rockefeller University (where he worked with Professor Gunter Blobel, the 1999 Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine) and the University of California, Los Angeles prior to joining the staff of the Scripps Research Institute and Scripps Memorial Hospital in 1993. He is presently a Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and the Graduate Program in Macromolecular and Cellular Structure and Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute. He is a Staff Ophthalmologist and Chief of the Retina Service at Scripps Clinic and Green Hospital as well as a Staff Ophthalmologist at Scripps Memorial Hospital. Dr. Friedlander has been a scholar of the Sinsheimer Foundation and the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation and his research is supported by the National Institutes of Health (National Eye Institute) and The Robert Mealey Program for the Study of Macular Degenerations. His research interests focus on understanding basic underlying mechanisms of ocular angiogenesis and identifying therapeutic approaches to treating ocular neovascular diseases such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He has also had a long-standing interest in targeting, translocation and integration of polytopic membrane proteins including rhodopsin and sodium-calcium exchangers. The two research programs are integrated by their application to the treatment of neovascular eye disease and inherited retinal degenerations.

Quang Nguyen, MD

Dr. Nguyen is Director of the Glaucoma Service at Scripps Clinic.  He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California and completed his internship at the University of California Irvine Medical Center. After completing his ophthalmology residency at the University of Florida, Dr. Nguyen was a fellow in glaucoma at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami. He joined the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center as an Assistant Professor. He also served as Chief of Ophthalmology at the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American Glaucoma Society.

José Ivan Quiceno, MD

Dr. Quiceno received his medical degree from the University of Caldas in Colombia. He served his internship at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Washington, and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of California San Diego Medical Center. He is a clinical instructor at UCSD and at the San Diego VA Medical Center.

 

 

Victoria Morrison, MD

Dr. Morrison received her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine and completed her internship in medicine at the University of Utah. She was a resident in ophthalmology at the University of California San Diego, where she was also Chief Resident. Prior to joining Scripps Clinic, Dr. Morrison had fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at UCSD’s  Shiley Eye Center.

 

 

Gregory I. Ostrow, MD

Dr. Greg Ostrow joined the Division of Ophthalmology at Scripps Clinic in 2007, following completion of a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Candidate in Training with the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

Dr. Ostrow is an editor of the journal International Ophthalmology Clinics and recently wrote the chapter on pediatric uveitis for the Handbook of Pediatric Ophthalmology. Several of his ophthalmic research findings have been presented nationally and printed in medical journals.  He is involved in numerous ongoing clinical research trials.

 

 J. Scott Thompson, OD

Dr. Thompson received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the University of California at San Diego, and his Doctor of Optometry degree from the School of Optometry at the University of California Berkeley. He has been practicing optometry at Scripps Clinic since 1982, and has been Head of Optometry since 1994. Dr. Thompson has a special interest in contact lenses.

 

 


Jennifer Trombley, RN, MSN, CCRC

Jennifer Trombley, RN, MSN, CCRC received her nursing diploma from the Millard Fillmore Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo, New York. She went on to complete her Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Nursing degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo and the University of Texas at Arlington, respectively. 

Jennifer has over thirty five years of acute care nursing experience, specializing in critical care and emergency medicine.  She has also worked in the medical device industry, both in applications and research.

For the past seven years, Ms. Trombley has been a Clinical Research Coordinator in the Retinal/Vascular and Women’s Health areas.  She also is involved in translational research, bridging the realms of Dr. Martin Friedlander’s Cell Biology laboratory at The Scripps Research Institute and the patients of Scripps Clinic.  The recent areas of study have been Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Edema, Atrophic and Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Macular Telangiectasia, and Stem Cell Therapy for Visual Disorders.

Jennifer has served as President for the San Diego, CA chapter of the Association of Clinical Research Professions. She is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Daphne Breshears, CCRC, COA

Daphne Breshears is an Ophthalmic Technician and Certified Clinical Research Coordinator.  She has over 25 years experience in all phases of ophthalmology and has been a clinical research coordinator since 2002.  Daphne is also a LASIK surgical assistant, certified VISX Laser System Operator and JACAHPO certified Ophthalmic Assistant.  She is a member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) and the Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO).
